Woodwork Tukang Kayu

Live · v0.59

Timber from the jungle, fibre and coconuts from the palms, and everything you build at the boatyard. Woodwork is the skill that gets you off the island.

Trees

Jungle trees give timber. Click a tree to cut it. Every 4 ticks you get an attempt; when it succeeds you get one timber and 25 XP. After each timber the tree has a 28% chance to come down, leaving a stump that grows back in 25 ticks (15 s). On average a tree gives 3.6 timber.

There are 75 trees on Perhentian, mostly in the island's jungle heart, and 52 in the forest south of Kuala Besut.

Live · Tools I, v0.38

Trees need a hatchet

You need a hatchet to cut a tree. Pak Mat gives you your first one, and another if you ever lose it. Kak Yah sells an iron hatchet that adds 8% to every swing from Woodwork 5. Hatchets and the forest.

Hard woods, bamboo and rattan

The forest south of Kuala Besut has more in it than jungle trees. Meranti and cengal are hard: a hatchet below their hardness just bounces off, whatever your level. Bamboo and rattan want a machete, which also works as a weapon.

About one forest tree in five south of the road is a meranti; the three furthest south are cengal. Bamboo grows on the grass by the river, rattan climbs beside the big trees, and a few bamboo clumps grow at the edge of the Perhentian jungle.

Meranti makes a hatchet handle at the boatyard, and Pak Leh forges a steel head onto it: the only way to a hatchet that bites cengal. Hatchets and the forest has the whole ladder.

Coconut palms

Palms grow on the sand. Each attempt takes 4 ticks; a success gives 20 XP and either a coconut or coconut fibre, half and half. After each success the palm has a 20% chance to be stripped bare for 20 ticks.

Coconut fibre is the most useful thing on the island: it becomes rope, rope becomes a boat, and fibre and timber together make arrows. Coconuts are food (3 HP).

18 palms on Perhentian, 6 on the Kuala Besut beach. Palms will stay tool-free: you climb them.

Your chance

Every gathering attempt in the game, trees, palms and fishing spots alike, uses the same rule:

chance = min( 92%, 35% + 3% × (your level − the thing's level) )
WoodworkChance (tree)AttemptWith lessonXP an hour

1577%2.4 s1.8 s28,875
2092%2.4 s1.8 s34,500

XP an hour counts cutting time only, without the lesson: no walking between trees and no full pack.

Pak Mat's lesson

Find Pak Mat at the boatyard. Cut five timber for him and he teaches you to let the blade do the work: every tree and palm attempt is one tick faster from then on (4 → 3). That is a third more timber an hour. He also gives you 150 Woodwork XP.

Making things

Woodwork is also the crafting skill. At the boatyard on Perhentian you twist fibre into rope, cut staffs, fletch arrows, weave a vest and build your boat. Crafting has the recipes.
